Empowerment for the Mind:
Focus vs. Motivation

I don’t think anyone uses the word “willpower” anymore, so let’s talk about the word we hear so much about: “motivation.” It seems like we all want to get “motivated.” Motivation is good. I will never say that it is bad. But somehow motivation doesn’t last.

I know I need to exercise, but I can’t get motivated. I know I need to eat better, but I can’t get motivated. To me, motivation usually means someone has nagged me enough to the point that I had better change or they will really get upset with me. My motivation becomes placating the people around me. No real life changes come from wanting to please someone else. I have to want to change myself for myself.

Focus is something that comes from within me. No one else can give me focus. I would chose focus over motivation any day of the week. Focus is keeping your eye on the ball. Focus is keeping the bigger picture in mind. I may not always be motivated to exercise or eat better, but my focus is to become healthy. My focus is to accomplish a healthy body through a balance of good eating habits and regular exercise. My focus comes from a commitment I made to myself.

So even if I have a difficult day of poor eating decisions, my focus remains. This focus gives me permission to forgive myself for mistakes and to decide to do better in the moment I contemplate my focus. I don’t wait until tomorrow to focus again on my objective. Tomorrow never comes. Did you know we can make a change in the middle of the day? I think it’s dangerous to tell myself I’ll do better tomorrow. Be the first on your block to regain your focus at 3:00 in the afternoon. It’s really quite an amazing experience after having been one of those people that said for years, “I’ll start tomorrow” or my favorite, “I’ll start Monday.”
