It's All About Balance

First things first: Let’s set up a basis of how we handle our food and eating patterns. Like everything else in life, I believe that balance is best. Too often, I have gone down the “all or nothing” path. What do I end up with? I either eat too much of one thing or too little food at all. If I live in extreme ways of doing things, then I usually end up with extreme chaos going on in my body or my mind. So let’s bring it down a notch.

Now, this is just a starter to ease us into some healthy food practices. Let’s try moderation. When it comes to food, don’t do too much of anything. Try having just some of this, some of that. Have some protein, but not too much. Have some carbs, but not too much. Have some snacks, but not too much.

Now, “some” and “too much” may vary from person to person, but I don’t think it will really vary “too much.” The point of this exercise is for us to build an awareness of what we are doing, especially with food. Let’s think about our decisions – but not “too much” or too little, for that matter. Here’s an example of what I mean.

Let’s say you decided to have some ice cream for dessert. When you are scooping out the ice cream for yourself, take a moment to think about what you are doing as you are doing it. Do you really need to fill the bowl to the rim? Perhaps try scooping only half of the amount you had last time. Create an awareness of your decisions. Balance can only exist in a state of awareness. At the same time, don’t obsess over the ice cream. If you made a decision to eat it, my goodness, please enjoy it!

This concept can be applied to almost any food plan you currently have – except those extreme ones. You may have an idea what I think of extreme food plans – not a good long-term idea. In Weight Loss Support, I will address basic food plan strategies – from quick fixes to making permanent eating life style changes.

Remember, conscious thought is the first step to change. We don’t have to fix everything right now. It’s all about balance. I would love to hear from you how this concept of balance applied to your eating.
